Ashley Overbeek makes Hamilton sports history

Ashley Overbeek - career scoring leader.

Going into the varsity girls’ first basketball game against Jenison, everyone knew there was a much bigger storyline than the outcome of the game. Starting senior guard Ashley Overbeek was gunning for the varsity girls’ career scoring record.

Close to five minutes into the first quarter, an inbound pass went right to the hands of senior Ashley Overbeek. She went up for the layup, and as it went in, the student section began the chant “Ash is cash!”

It took her a moment to realize exactly what she just did. Ashley had just broken the varsity girls career scoring record, previously held by Jill Herbig.

Herbig’s record was 1,001 career points, a record that stood a whole 18 years.

Overbeek ended up dropping 36 points on the night, leading her team to a 7-point win over Jenison.  She hit four 3-point shots on her way into the 1k-point club.

“The free throws at the end of the game were much higher pressure for me than breaking that record,” Overbeek said.

Coach VanHekken said he expected great things from her career.

“I knew from middle school that she was going to be special,” he said, “and I think she still has another 300 points in her this season.”
