Band focused on District 10 solo and ensemble

Katelyn Krause goes to solo and ensemble

Hamilton high school band students will be participating at Solo and
Ensemble this weekend along with many others from different high
schools. The Michigan State Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA)
District 10 event will take place at East Kentwood high school.

Solo and ensemble is a chance for students to practice and kind of show
off their solo and small ensemble musical abilities. Each group or solo
is judged by a single judge and is given a rating of one, two, three, four,
and sometimes five, with one being the best.

“We’re pushed to a higher level than in regular band,” sophomore
Katelyn Krause said. She will be performing a trumpet solo and a
trumpet duet with Cassie Olson. Krause has been participating in solo
and ensemble since seventh grade and does not plan on stopping.
“Seeing friends enjoy S&E work got me interested,” junior Hailey
Fathman said.
“They convinced me to do it, too.” Fathman will be playing her
trombone in a brass quintet, doing a trombone solo and a trombone
duet with Elizabeth Vandenbil. Fathman enjoys the individual technique
work and working in smaller groups.
“Mr. Suhusky told me to do it, so I did,” sophomore Zach Vanderkooi
said. Vanderkooi is playing his tuba in the same brass quintet as
Fathman and playing a tuba solo. Vanderkooi likes the competition and
has been participating in solo and ensemble for two years.
The competition will take place at East Kentwood high school
this Saturday, all day long. Respectful audiences are welcomed
and appreciated, so go on out and support your friends and fellow
classmates.
