Basketball practice underway for girls, boys start next week

Elijah Walker looks to pass the ball against the Allegan Tigers last season.

The winter sports season is beginning at Hamilton High School meaning that basketball is just around the corner. Girls basketball tryouts started Monday, Nov. 5, and boys basketball tryouts being Monday, Nov. 12.

Players like Courtney VandeVorde were all grins and giggles when explaining that she was excited for the season. Both VandeVorde and Elijah Walker are excited because they like the atmosphere of being with their team and playing on Friday nights.

“I’m excited to play with my friends and hangout with kids I couldn’t from football and grow as a team,” sophomore Gerrit Eding said.

VandeVorde and Walker both played varsity last year, so they already know their teams well and are excited to get to spend more time with them and bond even more.

Dylan Buresh made a similar statement. He is excited to get to spend more time with his friends outside of school and be on the court with them, and his older brother Ethan. That and “winning, of course.”

For others like freshman Spencer Boeve, they are just excited to play at the high school level.

Players don’t take basketball lightly here at the high school, they are fully dedicated. To prepare for the season many players went to summer conditioning, played on Court House, and did summer scrimmages/camps at colleges like GVSU and Ferris.

Many are also involved with other sports this fall, like cross country, soccer, volleyball, and football,  which also kept them in shape.

That will all pay off when they play one of their biggest rivals, Holland Christian.

Every person interviewed said that’s one of things they are looking forward to this season.

“I want to beat them really bad,” senior Molly Oren said.

Good luck to all who are trying out for basketball this winter sports season.
