Boys swim team beats Grandville for first time in dual meet

With two dual meets past the boys swimming and diving team, they defeated Grandville in their third dual meet of the season and are No. 1 in Division 3.

“This was the first time that the boys beat Grandville in a dual meet” Coach Eric Talsma said.

Making cut times for the state meet were Joey DeGood in the 200 Individual Medley (IM) and Phil Van Oss in the 500 Freestyle.

Event winners were the 200 medley team of Dylan Harris, DeGood,  John LaPorta, and Cameron Beyer. LaPorta in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, DeGood in the 200 IM, Austin Fathman in the 50 free and 100 free, Van Oss in the 500 freestyle, Dylan Harris in the 100 breaststroke, the 200 freestyle relay of DeGood, Zach Lepird, Andrew Smit, and Van Oss, the 400 freestyle relay of LaPorta, Fathman, Lepird, and Harris, and Ryan Overhiser won diving with a score of 212.85.

“Overall we swam well,” Talsma said.

The next meet for the boys will be this week Saturday January 8 in Holland at the Holland Aquatic Center for the Holland Christian DIII Invitational. All five of the top teams in DIII will be there and it is the same pool that they will be swimming in for the state meet in March.

“It will tell us a lot about where we are at and where we need to get better,” Talsma said.
