Band directors Joe Herrick and Kim Suhusky had an even busier day than their marching band students on the Thursday before Labor Day weekend.

Both teachers participated in the first official teacher work day of the year by attending meetings at the high school, and then both had to get ready for a big night.

The Hawkeye marching band would perform for the second time already this season when Hamilton hosted the Broncos from Coopersville.

However, unlike most Friday nights when the band is done at about 10 p.m., on Thursday the band would keep making music late into the night for an even larger audience.

According to Mr. Herrick, WZZM contacted him to feature Hamilton’s band during the 11 p.m. broadcast.   About 25 members of the band agreed to take up the challenge of performing live on TV, and they prepared to play a few numbers during breaks in the 11 o’clock news.

Mr. Herrick said the extra commitment would be interesting, but noted it would make for a long night.  The band planned to leave late in the 4th quarter of the Hawkeye varsity game (see game story here), then head to the station where WZZM would feed the students while explaining how everything would work.

Mr. Herrick expected the show to start a bit late because the live coverage of the Republican National Convention may push the start back to about 11:15 p.m.

Both Mr. Herrick and Mr. Suhusky looked forward to the opportunity though and were curious how it would turn out.
