Collin Welcher wrestles for state title

Collin Welcher performs a single leg early in his victory over Mason Smith of Clio.

Hamilton junior Collin Welcher will have a chance to be crowned the best Division II wrestler at 103 lbs. in the state later today at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Welcher (50-2), will face Issac Jewell of Goodrich in the final.

This is the first time a Hamilton wrestler has competed for the state championship in a decade, since Andy Cook won his weight class in 2002.

For Hamilton Head Coach Gregg Stoel, himself a two-time high school state champion for the Hawkeyes, a win by Welcher would give him two state champions as coach of the Hawkeyes.

For those interested in watching the matches from all four state qualifiers (Welcher, Harley Compagner, Will Braschler and Cameron Stoel), go to the Hamilton wrestling website here to see the action from the state finals.
