Double the fun: varsity basketball teams sweep Byron Center

A pair of home wins Friday night gave Hawkeyes fans much to cheer about.

In the girls game, junior guard Ashley Overbeek led Hamilton with 19 points, while Jenna Schra also hit double figures, scoring 10 in the No. 6-ranked Hawkeyes 57-39 victory.  Hamilton led all the way in this one, and got significant help on the offensive end from Molly Oren who chipped in with nine points, while Carlye Voorhorst and Courtney VandeVorde each added eight.

Byron was led by Molly Babbs who matched Overbeek’s 19 points.

For the boys, what started as a rout, ended much closer for the Hawkeyes as they sustained a late comeback from Bryon to hold on to a 51-46 victory.

Hawkeye senior forward Ethan Buresh led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points, while  Elijah Walker had nine points and seniors Trenton Haverdink and Nick Kronemeyer finished with eight points each.

The win pushed the girls record to 10-1.  They were ranked 6th in Class B at the start of the week.  The two wins over Holland and Byron should help them move further up in the polls.

The boys meanwhile improved to 6-3 overall, and 1-1 in conference play.
