Equestrian team places second in season opener

Lydia Phillips and Katelyn Krause line up at the end of their Hunt Seat Equitation class.

Hamilton’s equestrian team took second in their division at the first meet on September 7. They trail Allendale by 18 points and are ahead of Unity Christian by four.

Hamilton started the morning off earning zero points, as they do not have any members entered in the three showmanship classes, which hurt the team. This allowed other teams to earn points when Hamilton was not even in the game.

The girls came on strong in the afternoon, racking up points in the equitation and speed classes. They were able to gain quite a few points on Allendale, since Allendale did not earn any points in speed.

“We have a fairly good mixture of pleasure and speed,” Coach Deanna Prins said. “We might be lacking somewhat in the western equitation event.”

This meet was a big success for the five girls, as each girl was able to contribute points to the team’s overall score. If Hamilton keeps second place – or moves into first – they will advance to regionals at the end of the season. The equestrian team will be competing again this Saturday, September 14 to try and maintain their second place position.
