Four wrestlers capture conference titles; team finishes second

The Hamilton Hawkeyes’ varsity wrestling team lost a tough match last Friday to the Hastings Saxons. Victories by Brant Welcher (103 lbs), Jason Kruithof (112), Corey Schrotenboer (130), Mike Polet (140), Reuben Salinas (160) and Tyler Berens (189) were a contributing factor, but they fell short to a tough Hastings team.

“We need to wrestle more aggressive to be victorious in the future,” Coach Brian Morrison said.

There were some controversial calls made by the official, but Coach Morrison said that was not the reason why the team lost and that there were bad calls for both sides in the match.
According to postings on, there were several angered parents, some of whom plan to send in a tape of the match to the MHSAA to have the referee’s performance reviewed.

The Hawkeyes had a chance to share the conference title with the Saxons last Saturday but came up short.

Welcher, Salinas, Berens, and Tyler Buresh (285) took first place at the conference tournament. Second place went to Schrotenboer. Taking 3rd were Polet, Josh Campbell (145), Jordan Rozema (152), and Kirk Boerman (171).  Fourth place went to Anthony Reese (119), Sam Duren (140), and Dylan Raymond (215).

The Hawkeyes wrestle in Team Districts today against Unity at Hopkins.
