Girls basketball prepares for Districts

The girls basketball season is coming to an end with districts right around the corner.  The team will play Zeeland West in the first round at Unity Christian High School next Monday, February 18 at 8:00.

If the Hawkeyes win, they play again Wednesday, and the district championship is on Friday.

“The season was about average, but it could have been better,” senior Alyssa Castillo said.

According to Coach Dan VanHekken the team has improved a lot over the season especially with defense, but they need to work on attacking the basket.

“Our record so far is 8-10, and I think we have a pretty good chance of moving past districts,” Coach VanHekken said. “We’ve done some scrimmages with Zeeland West and I think our team is comparable to them.”

After a tough loss to South Christian on Tuesday 52-43, the team is pumped to play another game on Friday.

Sophomores Hannah Klenk & Kendra VanOrder, and freshman Kelly Ptacek all moved up for districts from the JV team.  Klenk is one of the captains of the JV team this year.

The JV team goes into its final game with a 9-10 record.  The JV’s team goal for this year was to be above .500.

The freshmen team refuses to allow last Tuesday’s defeat to bring them down. With a 12-5 record, they still have high hopes to win this Friday.
