Girls swimmers head to state meet today

The slogan for this year’s varsity swimming and diving team is very fitting, as they are “swim fast and have fun”. While the team’s dual meet record is 5-6, at conference the Hawkeyes took 2nd place losing only to Zeeland.

“My favorite part of conference was seeing the entire team cheering for a single person,” freshman swimmer Kerrie Dokter said, adding that, “seeing people get personal best times was really great.”

Coach Talsma was very proud of the team’s performance at conference.

“The girls swam and dove really well at the conference meet,” Coach Talsma said. “We couldn’t have asked for much better of a situation. We swam well on Friday night to put ourselves in position to swim really fast on Saturday.”

The team has had some great wins including the meet against Unity Christian.

They have also had some disappointing losses during the regular season including ones to rival Byron Center and Holland Christian.

“Byron Center is always a tough meet,” Coach Talsma said, “and to lose to them by two points stunk. But the loss to Holland Christian was more frustrating because we are a better team than them. We just didn’t show up to the meet.”

The team later beat Byron Center, and Holland Christian during the conference meet.

With the regular season for swimming now done, the members of the team who qualified for the state meet will be competing today and tomorrow.

State qualifiers include: seniors Julie Blaharski, Laurel Coon, Crystal Jager and Manda Schierbeek; juniors Dora Berends, Brittni Ritter, and Jessica Naber; sophomore Maddy
Kempkers; and freshman Maddie Klenk.

All the girls will be competing in swimming except Naber who will be diving.

“I will miss being with my teammates every day,” sophomore Kylie Maxson said.
