Girls varsity swimmers aim high for upcoming season

The Lady Hawkeye swimmers and divers line-up for the national anthem in a meet last year.

The girl’s varsity swim team has high expectations for this season. There are 29 girls, with about one-third of the team being seniors leading the team with their experience. Two of the members of this year’s team are divers.

“This will end up being one of the best [girls swim teams] [Hamilton] has ever had,” Coach Talsma said.

When Talsma was asked about his mission for this his team, he responded with saying his goal was to be top five at the state meet.

“Last year we were fifth and we’d like to do a little better than that,” he explained.

While Talsma named Emily Bussis, Maddy Brink, and Liz Vandewege as leaders of the team, he added that, “all the seniors are contributing and leaders.”

The freshmen of this team are: Mariah Castillo, Lizzie Goodman, Stephanie Johnson, Kaitlyn Meiste and Veronica Overbeck. Talsma mentioned he expects Johnson to make state cuts.

With their goal and their supportive team, this should be a great season for the girls.
