The Hamilton freshman football team won a very tight game against Hastings yesterday by a score of 30-28.

The game was a back and forth battle, with Hastings setting the tone early with a huge run that put Hastings on the goal line and punched in on the next play for a touchdown.

Hamilton came back with a couple of solid runs for first downs, that put Hamilton in a 1st and goal situation. But the next three plays were not successful, which gave Hamilton a 4th down. Hamilton went for it and scored on a screen pass from Alec Overbeek to Lucas Reimink. The 2-point conversion was no good.

Hastings increased their 1st half lead by as much as 20-6, but Hamilton dug their heels in and scored on the final play of the half on a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Overbeek.  With the a good two-point conversion, the score at the half was 20-14.

The second half started of with a bang as the O-line blew open a huge hole with Matt Field taking it to the house for six, the two-point was good giving Hamilton a 22-20 advantage. Hastings then scored on their next possession, but the defense stood their ground after that. ” Coach Randall did a really nice job adjusting for the 2nd half,” Coach Behnke said.

Hamilton’s last score of the day was an Overbeek scramble from 11-yard out, and the 2-point made the score 30-20.

Hastings got it back with a 8-point trip down the field, making it 30-28 Hamilton. This is how the game would finish as Hastings made a gallant effort as their attempt on 4th down with less than a minute left came up inches short, leaving the Hawkeyes on top.

Hamilton goes on the road to play Byron Center next week.
