High school lockdown drill a success

The halls were all empty in less than one minute for today's lockdown drill.

Hamilton High School Co-Principal Mat Rehkopf surprised students and staff just before 2nd period class this morning with a lockdown drill to see how quickly everyone could get to a safe, secure place.

The response: 53 seconds.

As Mr. Rehkopf wrote to the staff in an email: “Scott Corbin (emergency manager from Allegan County) was shocked that (staff was) not given the exact timing of the drill and the speed in which we locked this building down.”

Mr. Rehkopf wrote that he was pleased with the urgency staff members showed in pulling kids into classrooms even if they were not their own students.

He reiterated that the drill is about keeping students and staff safe in case of an emergency.
