Hamilton wrestlers win team district by one point

Hamilton junior Harley Compagner takes down an opponent from Wyoming Park earlier this season. Compagner won the conference title at 140 pounds.

For the 1oth straight year, the Hamilton varsity wrestling team captured a district title. The Hawkeyes won  the team district at Zeeland East by one point, edging out 2nd place Byron Center, 241-240.

“I was very happy with the performance of all wrestlers,” Coach Gregg Stoel said. “In order to win by one point many things had to happen over the course of the day. One wrestler not getting a pin over there opponent would have cost us two points. So it really was a whole team effort.”

This year the Hamilton wrestling team has had a record of 30 wins and only 7 losses. Their wins include titles at the Zeeland and Hopkins Invitationals.

Hamilton had five individual conference champions. The champions include: Malcom Jefferies, Harley Compagner, Cole VanHarn, Dylan Raymond, and Brandt Welcher.

Welcher, a senior, has won the conference championship all four years of his high-school career. Also, Hamilton won the dual portion of the conference going 6-0 in the league.
