Hawkeye soccer looking for more after win over Wayland in Districts

Austen Hornik dribbles while being challenged by Wayland defender. Hornik scored the first two goals for the Hawkeyes in their 5-1 district victory.

The Hamilton varsity soccer team defeated Wayland 5-1 at home in the first round of the District Tournament. The Hawkeyes got out to an early 2-1 after Austen Hornik scored twice early in the first half.

“It felt pretty good to help and put my team in an early lead,” Hornik said.

The Hawkeyes put the game away after Cody Weber, Elijah Walker and Brady Zomer also scored and keeper Josh Brigham made saves to help the Hawkeyes get the win.

“We want more,” Coach Ted Malefyt said after getting the win and looking forward to the game on Wednesday.

Malefyt said the team’s strengths were staying composed and staying focused, but he hopes to improve on being more consistent on finishing.

The Hawkeyes play at host Plainwell High School in the semi-finals, who had a round one bye, tonight at 7:00pm. If the Hawkeyes win, they will play the winner of Allegan/Richmond Gull Lake in the District Finals at 12pm Saturday in Plainwell.
