Hawkeye swimmers take D3 State title

The boys show off their hardware after the all-school assembly celebrating the team's state title. The championship was the second in three years for the Hawkeyes.

The Hamilton swimmers pulled it off once again, taking home a state title today in Division III swimming.

Hamilton ended the state meet with 251.5 points. Holland Christian made a surprise comeback to end up in second with 237.5, and East Grand Rapids, who had trailed Hamilton at second for most of the meet, and was in first for a time right before the last event, wound up in third with a score of 234.

Hamilton’s 200 free relay team of Austin Fathman, Zach Lepird, Ryan Hagen, and Joey DeGood not only took first, but set a new Division 3 record of 1:26.10.

Fathman was also first in the 50 free with a time of 21.31.

Second place finishes in the 200 medley relay and the 100 free by Fathman, and third place finishes in the 100 butterfly by John LaPorta, the 400 free relay, and in diving by Ryan Overhiser, as well as multiple other top eight finishes, helped Hamilton gain enough points to take the meet.

Congratulations state champions!
