Kate Kooiker wins 2012-2013 DAR Award

Hamilton seniors voted classmate Kate Kooiker their top ciitizen as the winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution Award.

Senior Kate Kooiker is this year’s recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizen Award.

“It’s an honor that both my peers and teachers thought I was deserving,” Kooiker said.

The nomination process of the award goes through both students and staff. First, each staff member votes for their top two or three students that embody the traits of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. Then, the three students with the most votes from the staff are compiled and put onto a ballot for their senior peers to vote for. For the school year of 2012-2013, the seniors had the task of choosing between classmates Andi DeNeef, Anna Spotts, and Kooiker.

“It’s always a tough decision,” Hamilton Co-Principal Mr. Mat Rehkopf said. “There are a lot of great kids.”

At the final tally, seniors chose Kooiker as the 2012-2013 recipient of the DAR Good Citizen Award.

The next step to getting money in scholarships for college is a competition amongst all DAR Good Citizens.

Kooiker does not yet know which college she will attend, but she is looking at Hope College in Holland.

She plans on going into Art Education.
