Quiz Bowl aims for return to state finals at MSU

This year’s Quiz Bowl team hopes to return to the state tournament.

“Our goal is always to make it to state,” coach Mr. Kevin Spotts said.

The state tournament will take place in April at MSU. For one of the varsity teams to go to state, they would have to win this week’s match.

In the four competitions that have already occurred, the Quiz Bowl team has placed 3rd and 4th, as well as 3rd in a close four-way tie at a home match.

There are two JV and two varsity teams with five or six people per team.

“When I first started 10 years ago, there was one team,” coach Mr. Kevin Spotts said.

According to junior and varsity member Brittany Melvin, “There’s some math and quite a bit of geography,” as well as history, literature, grammar, and mythology questions.

Junior and JV team member Lanie Diekema said questions asked can be as easy as 4x = 28 and as hard as what’s the monologue of 12 = 53.

“(I hope) not to look stupid,” Diekema said.
