Teamwork pays off for boys swimmers in win over GR Christian

Last night the boys swim team swam hard core to beat Grand Rapids Christian 104-82. Some of the team members received new state cuts for the group. Among these swimmers were Phil VanOss in the 200 free, Dylan Harris in the 50 free, and Andrew Smit in the 100 fly.

It is their goal to have more guys to make state cuts and ultimately get faster.

“We are swimming well,” Coach Eric Talsma said, ”but we have the potential to really close the doors on other teams if we can continue to improve.”

However the team has made stellar improvement since the beginning. The depth swimmers are going faster, especially last night which helped the team to win the meet. They are getting better at finishing their races, along with improvement in touching the pad before their opponents in close races.

“We have also been working very hard on our walls and that has paid off as well,” Coach Talsma said.

Some of the major points of this meet were Austin Fathman, Zach Lepird, and Dylan Harris taking 1st, 3rd, and 4th in the 50 free. However, it all began after diving when they took 1st, 3rd, and 4th in the 100 fly, with Joey DeGood taking 1st, Andrew Smit grabbing 3rd, and Cameron Beyer taking 4th.

Another great highlight was the 500 free. Coach Talsma said, “John Anthony LaPorta and their #1 went back and forth throughout the entire race and John was able to beat him in the end by about a body length.”
