Varsity football drops Homecoming game to Byron Center

Andrew Huizenga gets wrapped up by the Byron Center defense.

The Hamilton varsity football team lost its Homecoming game on Sept. 28 to Byron Center 42-21.

A slow start doomed the Hawkeyes to its second loss in a row and the risk of not getting a state play-off berth.

The Hawkeyes faced a 21-0 hole in the 2nd quarter, but a 41 yd reception by Jared Overbeek from Nick Kronemeyer and a 32 yd reception by Jeff Dyke from Kronemeyer set up a 2 yd touchdown run by Heath Dannenberg to make it 21-7.

Byron Center scored again making it 28-7 with 2:40 left in the half, but a 35 yd touchdown reception by Andrew Huizenga from Kronemeyer made it 28-14.

Hamilton closed it to within a touchdown when Dannenberg had a 3yd touchdown run in the 3rd quarter to make the score 28-21.

However, the Hawkeye defense couldn’t stop Byron Center and they scored two more touchdown to make the final score 42-21.

The Hawkeyes dropped to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the OK Green.

Hamilton will travel to Holland Christian for its next game on Oct. 5 with a 7 p.m. kick-off.
