Varsity girls avenge season-ending loss, remain undefeated at Wayland

The varsity girls had a challange on their hands Friday night, as they traveled to Wayland to face the team that ended the girls’ season last year at districts.

In a tough defensive battle, the Hawkeyes came out on top, 39-38 to continue their undefeated record, raising it to 6-0.

The The score went back and forth all night, as Wayland was able to sink two 3-pointers that would change the score. The game came down to a foul called at the last few seconds of the game.

This sent junior Rachael Tolsma to the line to shoot two. She was able to sink the first one, but missed the second. Even though she missed the second free throw, her one point sent Hamilton to a one point lead over Wayland, giving Hamilton the victory.

“It certainly was a defensive struggle tonight.  Both teams played hard and were solid on the defensive end,” Hamilton Head Coach Dan Vanhekken said.

Tolsma led a balanced scoring attack for the Hawkeyes with nine points.  Ashley Overbeek added eight, Jenna Schra chipped in with seven, while Kate Kooiker added six.

Hamilton looks to defend its record at Hudsonville’s holiday tournament, where the team is scheduled to play Grandville in the first game.
