The Hamilton Hawkeyes varsity girls basketball team finished its regular season with a win over Unity Christan. The 58-32 win over the Crusaders last week Friday cemented their OK Green conference championship. The Hawks finished their regular season with a 19-1 season record with their only loss coming from Grandville.   The league title was the first regular season championship since 1994.

“We have just won a conference championship and that is very satisfying and well deserved by the girls, they’ve worked hard,”  Coach Dan VanHekken said.  “As we head into districts, there is no turning back.  You either win or go home.  Our goal is to win a district championship.  If our wave ever crashes, it’ll be hard for me emotionally to know that it is the end of the road for our five wonderful seniors.  They have meant so much to our program.  They should feel proud of what they accomplished because not many Hamilton girls basketball teams have done what they have done.”

The girls are approaching their district championship this Friday against their rivals Holland Christan. The Hawkeyes beat their rivals this season 38-36 in the two hearts for one cause basket ball game were the two schools managed to raise over 5,000 dollars for the American Cancer Society.

“It’s always a good thing when we beat HC,” Coach VanHekken said.  “This game meant more than beating just HC, it was for a championship,”

The district championship will take place at Hudsonville Unity Christian High school this Friday at 7 pm. It’s a fight for the district between to arch rivals, the Hawkeyes vs. the Maroons.

The winner will move on to regionals and the loser will have the satisfaction of a great season.

“If you lose, you go home. We don’t want to go home,” Coach Dan Vanhekken said.
