Varsity girls golf ends successful season

The varsity girls golf team, led by coach Kevin Arnold, wrapped up their season last week with their regional tournament in which they placed 11th out of 20 teams.

Regionals were difficult this year due to the damp conditions and stiff competition.

“[Regionals had] Tough conditions with even tougher competition” senior golfer Becca Lubbers said.

“We came into regionals focused on having fun” senior Ashly Gutierrez said. “For [Becca Lubbers, Nancy Lubbers and I], it was the last match of our high school golf career.”

Finishing tied for second with Hastings in their last conference jamboree, the girls golf team showed much improvement over the season.

“This jamboree at Railside was the highlight of our season,” coach Kevin Arnold said. “All the girls played well and it showed their improvement over the season.”

“The teams main weakness this year has been their lack of practice during the off season,” Coach Arnold said. However, he added, “the team never gave up and tried their best every golf match.”

Varsity golf member Nancy Lubbers, led the team this year in scoring average.

“My biggest struggle for the season has been my putting,” she said. “The strong point in my game would have to be my driving and tee shots.”

However the team faced some struggles as a whole. The girls golf team faced many challenges and overcame a few struggles and overall it was a solid season.

“We just didn’t play up to par this season,” Gutierrez said. “We know we can compete.”

Hamilton finished 5th overall in Conference play and had a 4-2 record in non-conference. “The girls met the coaches expectations,” coach Arnold said.

The girls got along very well throughout the golf season. They were out to have fun and did just that.

“My team is the bomb,” Gutierrez said. “Even though we have fun on the course, we have just as much fun off it.

“We once ate 20 double cheeseburgers from McDonald’s on the way home from a golf match,” Gutierrez said “We have a lot of fun and the Excursion rides would be the non-golfing highlight of the season.”

Seniors Becca and Nancy Lubbers (no relation) were awarded All Conference Honorable mention for their play this season.
