Varsity volleyball filled with energy, working to improve

The varsity volleyball team played at Wyoming Park on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The volleyball team this year is very young. The team consists of four freshmen, one sophomore, three juniors, and three seniors.  This youth may be cause for some bumps in the road, but the girls do have three senior teammates to lead them.

Libby Stafford, Elly Vanderveen, and Joscelyn Fritzsche are the three seniors who who return this year. A lot is expected of them by leading by example and being vocal leaders on the court.

According to Coach Abby Ekkens, one of the team’s strengths is their youthfulness because they’re willing to learn new things and have a lot of energy.  She added the team also has a few weaknesses.

“We need to get better on our serving and on the things we can control…like not touching the net,” she said.

During practice the team is working really hard and keeping positive attitudes. Both of these things will be helpful when competing against major opponents: Byron Center, Holland Christian, and Unity Christian.

“We’re hoping to finish in the top half of our conference,” Coach Ekkens said.

Even if they don’t finish in the top half of their conference, they will still have been successful because they’re “staying together as a team and not worrying about the wins and losses,” Coach Ekkens said.
