Volleyball wraps up intense season

The Hamilton varsity volleyball team was gung-ho to beat the tough Holland Christian squad in the district championship match when they were stopped dead in their tracks.

The team had to forfeit the district championship game, due to an MHSAA rule stating that players can play only 18 dates in a season. The team had a couple girls who were pulled up from JV who had already played their 18 dates on JV. This was a result of some simple miscommunication between Coach Abby Ekkens and Athletic Director Jerry Haggerty.

When Ekkens asked Haggerty if she could move some girls up from JV for the tournament, Mr. Haggerty said that he wasn’t thinking about the fact that the girls were going to play in the conference tournament as well as the District tournament.

“I thought they would just play in the District tourney,” Mr. Haggerty said.

This would have been fine of they would have only played in the district tournament.

“I wasn’t aware that this rule applied for JV as well,” Coach Ekkens said.

Mr. Haggerty also added that many other teams have also done the same thing without noticing what they were doing.

“This brought us closer together as a team even though the situation is awful.” senior Alex LaFleur said.
Even though they had this mishap their season still had many high points.

“Our best game this year was the Hopkins games we really came together well.” senior Nicole George said.  The team had to climb over many obstacles this year with the many injuries they had.

“Even though we had a lot of injuries we were able to come back great at the end.” junior Hannah Klenk said.

Coach Ekkens, who is a first year coach at Hamilton, was loved across the board by the whole team.

The Varsity volleyball team ended up being 26-26-8. Coach Ekkens is hoping the girls will use this unfortunate ending as an incentive to beat Holland Christian next year.
