Welcher takes 3rd, Stoel 7th at state finals

Collin Welcher closed out his high school wrestling career for the Hawkeyes with a win to capture 3rd place in the 119 pound weight class at the individual wrestling state finals today.

Welcher, who placed 2nd last year at 103 pounds, lost his only match of the weekend to eventual state runner-up Dean Somers of Lapeer West by a 6-0 decision.

Welcher came back from that loss to post four straight victories, including a 3-2 decision over Anthony Garcia of Adrian in his final match.

Stoel also advanced to the road of 8 despite an early loss at the tournament.  His 7-0 loss to the eventual state champion at 189 pounds, Payne Hayden of St. John’s, knocked him into the lower bracket.  He won the next match, but lost to 6th place finisher Landon Pelham of Tecumseh, before coming back to win his final match and capture 7th place in the state.  His 8-2 decision over Joseph Chatman of Inkster gave Stoel a senior year record of 45-6.

Welcher finished his final wrestling season at 51-3.
