Three down, one to go: Welcher to wrestle for 103lb state title Saturday

Hamilton started the day with four wrestlers vying to place in the top eight at the individual state finals.  However, after Will Braschler, Harley Compagner, and Cameron Stoel suffered their second defeats of the tournament today, Hamilton junior Collin Welcher (50-2) is the lone Hawkeye still standing.

Welcher defeated Mason Smith of Clio in the 103 lb. semifinal match at the Palace of Auburn Hills earlier today and will wrestle for an individual state championship tomorrow.  Welcher’s 7-0 decision over Smith (52-5) helped him advance to tomorrow’s final against Issac Jewell (44-5) of Goodrich.

Jewell won his semifinal match by an 18-2 technical fall over Jake Busing (48-6) of Byron Center.

At 140 lbs., Hamilton senior Harley Compagner (44-9) lost his second match of the day to bow out of the tournament.  He was pinned by Jesse Smith (44-5) from Warren Lincoln.

Cameron Stoel (171 lbs.) dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Robert James from Flint Kearsley in his final match at the tournament.

Senior Will Braschler was the first Hawkeye to exit the tournament after his second defeat earlier in the day.

Braschler and Compagner ended their careers as Hawkeye wrestlers at the tournament.

As a junior, Stoel (41-13) still has one more year to wrestle.
